Become a Locum pharmacist or take a permanent role?
We often get asked which route is best, being a locum pharmacist or having a full time position. There are so many factors in play that we wanted to run through a few of the FAQ’s.
Thinking of moving into a permanent role?
The first is always job security, is you are an employed pharmacist, you will typically have a more stable job with guaranteed hours and a regular income.
This provides guaranteed financial security whereas being a locum pharmacist can be very profitable, you aren’t necessarily guaranteed a regular fixed income, which can make it more difficult when planning for the future.
As a full time Pharmacist, you may often be eligible for more benefits. Many employers offer benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off to their employees. As a locum pharmacist, you would typically not receive these benefits.
There is also a lot more room for professional growth opportunities, as an employed Pharmacist, you will have more opportunities at the pharmacy you work for. That goes from more responsibilities, different courses and even management fast tracking.
Working in one place also helps build a rapport with the community you are based. As well as the community you will also build relationships with your colleagues which adds to providing a nice work place culture.
While locum work can offer flexibility and variety in your work schedule, becoming an employed pharmacist can provide you with greater job security, benefits, and opportunities for career growth. Ultimately, the decision will depend on your individual priorities and goals.
